An innovative headquarters for a global technology company, the nation’s largest cast iron and pipe fitting foundry, a one-of-a-kind destination club – construction in the Carolinas is booming, and the faces behind many of these projects are women. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives are shaping some of the region’s most iconic builds.

Kaitlyn Crummie, a project engineer at Carolinas-based general contractor Barringer Construction, started as an intern in 2022. She’s currently helping build Tree Farm Golf Club, a new destination club in Aiken, S.C. “I’m working with incredible mentors on projects that are shaping our community. That’s not something I take for granted, and I want other women to know there’s a place for them in construction, too,” Crummie Says

Carle Wallin, a project manager at Barringer, believes the roles of women in construction are only increasing,. Her experience building over $55 million of cutting-edge spaces for technology companies across the RTP has helped shaper her career. “I’m incredibly proud to work for a company where I know my career path is not restricted by my gender,” Wallin says.

At Barringer women are involved in every aspect of construction, from marketing and preconstruction to operations and safety. “As more women enter our ranks, the industry is changing in a positive way. Women need to know they’re not on an island; we’re an essential part of the team,” says Assistant Project Manager Erika Awles.

Project Manager Alyssa Ard spent the last two years on a multi-milliondollar renovation of one of Charlotte’s top hospitality venues. Her passion to build something greater is what drew her to construction. “I want to leave my mark on this world through my actions and career,” Ard says. “I can’t think of a better way to do so than to be a part of building the Carolinas.”
