Relocating a high-tech control room down seven floors to enhance the employee experience and ease of access to amenities

Often compared to a command center, gas control rooms are a crucial part of a gas company’s business, requiring around the clock staffing with highly trained controllers who keep tabs on every leg of pipeline systems, facilities and plants using a system of computer screens, alarms and telecommunications equipment. Headquartered in Charlotte, Piedmont Natural Gas wanted to reimagine its current control center to be a space that would better serve its employees by offering a larger workspace, more amenities and top-tier technology.

PNG’s gas control room was fully relocated from the 7th floor of the building to the basement.
The new control room includes access to amenities ranging from a fitness room and shower to a full-service kitchen.
Our team helped facilitate the smooth transition and integration of a wide range of technology, including touchscreen walls.
All work was completed in an occupied building with extensive efforts taken to ensure minimal disruption to other patrons.

Implementing an employee-centric design

PNG relocated its facilities from the seventh floor of its building in Piedmont Town Centre to the basement where the addition of a fitness center, shower facilities, a full-service kitchen, and employee break room help make the long shifts more comfortable and convenient. The project team worked closely with the client to help create a modern, clean design that reflects PNG’s goal to lighten up the technology-heavy space.

Facilitating a smooth technology transition

The control room sits at the heart of the space, serving as the central focus. It is equipped with ergonomic desks that have 12 monitors each, touchscreen walls and a radius screen wall with 50 television monitors that operate in sync with one another. Each piece of equipment needed to be carefully transferred, recalibrated and tested extensively to ensure the control room was operating smoothly and correctly.
