Rivaling competition with a new multi-purpose athletic complex to attract stellar athletes and uphold Asheville School’s commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship

Considered among the best athletic facilities in the Southeast, athletics has been a rich part of the Asheville School tradition since the institution’s earliest days. Challenged with trying to get into an arms race with rival schools, the private boarding school revived its outdated athletics complex into a state-of-the-art, brand-new facility that is a major highlight for the athletics program. The facility is complete with a synthetic turf field, field lights, a branded track, stadium seating for 500, a press box, and field-level restrooms. The project was part of Asheville School’s $25 million capital improvements campaign.

Longstanding Rivalry
Casual, undefined fields to the south of the central core of the campus were developed very early in the school’s history as athletic facilities. These are still in use today as soccer, baseball, hockey, and football fields.
Thoughtful coordination was key during logistics planning. A temporary jobsite entrance was created to conceal construction and protect the student population from potential safety risks. This also produced cost savings for the client as it eliminated asphalt and landscaping repairs due to construction traffic.
The Asheville School/Christ School rivalry represents North Carolina’s longest-running high school athletics rivalry. At Asheville School, the rivalry game is preceded by a week of festivities that culminate in a pep rally the evening before the Blues take the field.

On-time delivery for the fall football season

Asheville School’s outdated football field received a much-needed facelift. New non-slip synthetic turf allows the field to be used year-round and prevents athletic injuries from accidental falls. A new branded track was also added surrounding the field, as was a new press box, field lighting, and field-level restrooms. In preparation for installing the new turf, the construction team used laser grading to level the ground surface and prevent the field from failing due to puddling, soft spots, holes, and lips. In a matter of five months, the school was ready to unveil its new digs just in time for the fall football season.
