Expanding genomic technology innovation for patients in the US with a new Research Triangle-based headquarters and state-of-the-art clinical cancer diagnostic laboratory

In 2021, genomic technology firm Biofidelity opened a US headquarters in the Research Triangle Park, expanding its presence in the US market ahead of its first product launch. The company was seeking a prime location with access to a highly skilled workforce and proximity to leading healthcare providers and universities to establish its new, state-of-the-art clinical cancer diagnostic laboratory outfitted to attract the best talent in the region to bring break-through technologies to market that enable healthcare practitioners to perform high-precision multi-gene analysis for cancer patients in real-time.

Construction Approach
Biofidelity’s RTP headquarters was a first-generation buildout of a spec space located at a new life sciences development and includes an open office area with workstations, meeting rooms, an employee break room, and a BSL-2 lab, where scientists have a safe work environment to experiment and conduct testing.
BSL-2 classification, given to labs that work with agents dealing with human disease, required the addition of enhanced safety measures and procedures.
Breaking the construction into phases allowed our team to get a Certificate of Occupancy for the lab so Biofidelity could begin operations before the office build-out was complete.

Adhering to mandated laboratory requirements

Designed to house human diseases that pose a moderate health hazard, the lab’s BSL-2 status required the addition of enhanced safety measures and requirements such as biological safety cabinets, proper hazardous material disposal equipment, hand and eye washing stations, and self-closing, lockable access doors. A generator was added to back up the lab’s equipment and freezers in the event of a power outage, and electrical upgrades were implemented in the lab, including the addition of power in ceiling panels and perimeter walls.

ENSURING FUCNTIONALITY & TIMELY DELIVERY

Biofidelity’s new RTP location also includes the build-out of open office space, a break room, and a conference room. The project was phased to accommodate the business’s needs, with the construction team working to complete the power and electrical scope in the existing spec lab to get the company operational before completing the build-out in the now-occupied space.
