Developing a model hybrid work environment that improves efficiency and sets the standard for the company’s “new way of working”

Schneider Electric is a global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation. A multinational company with offices worldwide, Schneider Electric aimed to centralize and consolidate its multiple Raleigh-Durham area facilities totaling nearly 300,000 square feet and over 400 employees under one roof. The company’s journey resulted in a new innovative facility that helps attract and retain top-tier talent, creates an environment to invigorate collaboration and discovery, and meaningfully highlights Schneider Electric’s commitment to the Triangle region.

The new home to the company’s more than 400 employees includes R&D labs, customer training rooms, conference rooms, collaboration spaces, an open office area with employee workstations, warehouse space, a testing bay, a spectroscopy room, and other amenities such as an employee café and lounge.
The brand-new Morrisville facility consolidated over 300,000 square feet at Schneider’s former Morrisville and Knightdale buildings, optimizing the company’s regional footprint and reinforcing its commitment to the Raleigh area.
This hybrid or flex-use facility brings all departments and business functions together under one roof to better support employee flexibility and team collaboration while prioritizing sustainability and energy efficiency.
The RaleighHub includes innovative R&D labs focused on Artificial Intelligence, industrial manufacturing, materials development, intelligent building systems, and intelligent security.
The project team excelled at conducting on-site plan reviews to improve design efficiency and reduce mid-project design changes, enabling significant savings while still meeting all functional requirements.
The Schneider Electric RaleighHub won the Best Interiors award at the annual Triangle TCREW Champion Awards in 2022.

From an abandoned Sam’s Club to a state-of-the-art hybrid facility

Schneider’s vision for the RaleighHub was brought to reality through the 12-month-long conversion of an abandoned Sam’s Club warehouse into a 65,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art energy and automation technology research and development center featuring labs focused on Artificial Intelligence, industrial manufacturing, materials development, intelligent building systems, and intelligent security.

Early collaboration results in cost savings and design enhancements

Schneider’s early partnership with Barringer, the architect, and the engineers allowed the project team to collectively provide guidance and expertise throughout the design and preconstruction process. Exploration of design alternatives, along with extensive pricing exercises, allowed for in-depth assessments and creativity, which produced approximately $700,000 in savings for the client while enhancing the final design.

The Barringer Way

Providing value to Our architecture & Design partners

Several interior design concepts, material selections, and electrical elements in the final space resulted from the team’s early collaboration and planning. For example, they came together to design the skylights to serve as the largest light shed in the space and created custom framing details to eliminate structural studs above the walls, helping Schneider achieve its desire for an open-air aesthetic.

Crafting a new vision for the Schneider customer experience

In a forward-thinking move, Schneider replaced outdated “innovation spaces” featuring physical product displays with clear window-faced labs in which innovation can be seen happening first-hand, high-tech training facilities, and designated product engagement spaces that allow customers to safely view, learn about, and test Schneider’s products.

Encouraging use of the client’s Products & Materials

Electrical components were purposefully integrated into the design to showcase the beauty of Schneider Electric’s products. Acoustical panels were designed to allude to the bends created in electrical piping. Most excitingly, Schneider utilized its own products and technologies, including the HVAC, building, and lighting control systems.

“I just spoke with the owner, and he is absolutely thrilled with the work that you are all providing for the client. He recognized the roles that each of you have played and commented that your work has contributed immensely to the success of the project. Thanks for the work that you do!”
